A woman's unsettling encounter in Northwest prompted police to take action in the arrest of Bryan Sommers, 53, for an alleged misdemeanor sexual abuse. At around 1 p.m. on April 24, the woman believed an initial encounter with Sommers at the corner of Connecticut Avenue and L Street, Northwest, was an accident, but after he followed her into a store and touched her again, she recognized the severity of his intentions. After she screamed at him, the suspect made a quick exit, according to Metropolitan Police Department reports.

Investigative efforts culminated in the arrest of the suspect on May 3. Sommers, a man of no fixed address, was apprehended by officers from the United States Secret Service Uniformed Division working under a D.C. Superior arrest warrant.

Charged with Misdemeanor Sexual Abuse, Sommers' arrest has brought temporary closure to an incident that left a community on edge and a woman to grapple with the violation of her personal space, which stretched far beyond the physical touch—it was a trespassing against her sense of security, and against the communal safety that residents and passerby are entitled to feel in the warp and weft of Northwest's streets. His subsequent detainment was announced published by the MPDC on May 5.
