Miami Mother Arrested on Child Neglect Charges as Children Found in Degraded ConditionsSource: Miami-Dade Corrections & Rehabilitation

A Miami mother faces child neglect charges after her two children were found in distressing conditions, with the elder found wandering the streets alone and the younger discovered in a neglectful home environment, according to authorities. Shelby Jung, the mother of the two children, was detained yesterday after her 3-year-old daughter was seen walking barefoot near Northwest 17th Avenue and 81st Street at approximately 5 p.m., as reported by WSVN.

Officers initially struggled to find the parents but later managed to contact Jung's boyfriend, Ron Smith, who claimed that Jung had left for a store trip. Upon her eventual return at roughly 6:30 p.m. on a bicycle, she was arrested, as detailed by Local 10. The younger child, just 1-month-old, was found in an unsanitary home without basic utilities and appeared malnourished, suffering from severe diaper rash and a rash on his chin.

Jung claimed she had entrusted the care of her children to her boyfriend, however, conditions at the residence and the state of the children led to swift police action. "Failed to provide and protect the victims with care, supervision, and the services necessary to maintain the victims physical and mental health,” authorities cited, according to WSVN. Jung now faces two counts of child neglect without great bodily harm and is being held at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a bond of $1,000, also detained on an out-of-county warrant.

The current whereabouts of the two children were not confirmed by police immediately, leading to further questions about their welfare post-arrest, with police merely indicating that the children were soiled and that the baby boy appeared to be malnourished when found laying on a blanket on the floor alone, while Shelby Jung was dealing with the aftermath of her alleged neglect and incarceration.
