Tragedy struck early Thursday morning in Glendale when a man was killed and a woman severely injured after being hit by a car while crossing the street, the crash has reopened conversations about pedestrian safety in the area. The incident, which occurred around 2:40 A.M. near the intersection of 49th and Peoria Avenues, involved two pedestrians and a sedan that was traveling eastbound on Peoria Avenue, according to ABC15.

Glendale police said the man and woman were crossing mid-block when they were struck, the driver of the sedan is not suspected of impairment at the time of the crash and has been cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Following the crash, police shut down Peoria Avenue between 43rd and 51st avenues to conduct their investigation, the road was reopened several hours later around 9 A.M., as reported by Arizona’s Family.

The male victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the female victim was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries; their identities have not been disclosed. Arizona’s Family news crews noted that authorities conducted a field sobriety test on the driver involved in the crash, who stayed at the scene after the incident.
