Mesa Police Fatally Shoot Knife-Wielding Woman to Rescue Threatened BoyfriendSource: Google Street View

A woman was fatally shot by a Mesa police officer on Thursday after she reportedly threatened her boyfriend with a knife. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, the incident occurred around 11 a.m. near Center and 14th Streets. Mesa Police have confirmed that there are no other suspects and that there is no ongoing danger to the public.

The situation escalated when the woman's roommate made a call to 9-1-1 stating that the suspect was inside her home threatening her boyfriend, preventing him from leaving. Officers tried to coax the woman to safely exit the residence, using a loudspeaker to communicate. During the confrontation, they could hear a man inside screaming for help, prompting the officers to rapidly enter the home. One officer then fired at the woman.

"We were able to rescue the male out of the house. At that point, get him out and get him to safety. Once we cleared the rest of the house, we then brought the suspect out to the front of the house to get immediate medical attention,"  Mesa Police stated, as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix. Despite efforts to provide medical aid, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not been disclosed. No officers sustained injuries during the incident.

An ongoing investigation seeks to thoroughly understand what precisely caused the officer to discharge their weapon as detailed by AZFamily.com. The boyfriend involved in the confrontation was not physically harmed. This recent shooting marks the 33rd officer-involved incident in Maricopa County in 2024.
