Tapping into a $7 billion national grant pot named Solar For All, initiated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Austin Energy will focus its efforts on communities historically left in the shadows of the renewable energy wave.
The windfall, heralded earlier this week in the spirit of Earth Day, will see Austin Energy deploy solar power across disadvantaged communities, expecting to slash customer bills by over 20%, a figure that translates to an average annual savings nearing $2,000, KXAN reported. Additionally, the initiative is set to create a wave of good green jobs by leveraging a locally trained workforce.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy, funded by President Biden's Investing in America agenda under the Inflation Reduction Act. The substantial funds allocated to the Solar For All program aim to mitigate financial barriers hindering low-income residential solar deployment, explained the Public Power publication. The selected programs will serve households across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and territories, including those under tribal governance.
The investments by Austin Energy are expected to not only reduce carbon pollution by promoting green energy usage but also enhance local community resilience. This resilience comes in the form of battery backup systems, particularly benefitting medically vulnerable citizens, according to KXAN. From the program, homes will receive incentives for playing host to solar arrays and batteries for a generous fifteen years. The qualifying customer is promised a guaranteed 20% bill discount through the low-income Community Solar Program subscription.
Moreover, the Solar For All strategy will enable Austin Energy to initiate 15-year power purchase agreements for solar energy and performance contracts for storage batteries, seen as a coup for renewable advocates. Notably, these renewable sources and backups will be managed as virtual power plants, a forward-thinking move to save money for all Austin Energy patrons when market energy prices spike. The utility aims to partner with local solar installation contractors, putting a notable emphasis on aid for households with medically vulnerable residents, highlighted Public Power.
