A routine traffic stop in San Jose turned into a multicar incident on Sunday, April 28, when a deputy from the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office engaged in a car chase with a suspect that resulted in multiple injuries. According to the Sheriff's Office press release, the pursuit began after deputies attempted to pull over a gold Lexus sedan for speeding.

The driver, identified as 24-year-old Thomas Thach, failed to comply, taking deputies on a chase through Eastside San Jose. It was during this pursuit that a deputy collided with an SUV, injuring its three passengers and himself. As per a report from CBS News San Francisco, the occupants of the Toyota SUV were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and were later released.

The chase did not end with the collision. Thach continued to flee, even reportedly slamming into a patrol car on purpose. It took the deployment of spike strips for the deputies to finally halt the Lexus. Despite the impediments, Thach tried to make a break for it on foot but was ultimately captured by law enforcement.

Thach now faces an array of charges, including suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle, assault with a deadly weapon, and evading a peace officer. In the aftermath, the Sheriff's Office confirmed that an investigation into the deputy's crash during the pursuit is underway.
