Irving, Texas has an unexpected family making headlines as fuzzy baby hawks take the spotlight on a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) traffic cam. A red-tailed hawk, which has made a nest atop a TxDOT camera on Texas Highway 114, is catching eyes as web-viewers around the state watch the newly hatched eyas during their first days of life, KENS 5 reported.

The camera, located at Texas 114 and Rochelle Boulevard, has been a perch for the hawks for years, and the TxDOT often rotates it to give the public a bird's-eye view of the nesting process. Just over a month after laying eggs, a baby hawk emerged from its shell, and TxDOT's live stream caught one of the parents delivering a rat for the baby's lunch, NBC DFW noted. While the hawks feast primarily on rodents, their varied diet means viewers might witness a gamut of wildlife being brought back to the nest for feeding, the outlet detailed.

These hawk chicks, or eyas, generally leave the nest about six or seven weeks after hatching, as Audubon's website states. However, they won't be ready for strong flight until a few more weeks have passed. Conservationists and wildlife enthusiasts alike advocate for bird-watching as a means to connect with and appreciate the native fauna of Texas

If travelers are looking for traffic updates, they might be momentarily greeted by the sight of these fledgling hawks instead. When not in use for monitoring road conditions. Motorists can resort to TxDOT's website for updates on the roadways, and perhaps, catch a glimpse of the hawks when traffic is light, according to NBC DFW.
