Until this morning, we at Haighteration didn't believe in ghosts. But now we're not so sure.

First, as usual, some backstory. The giant mansion on the corner of Pierce and Waller is probably the spookiest second-spookiest, largest, pinkest, and most mysterious house in the neighborhood. It's also boarded up, padlocked, and abandoned. Or at least, so we thought. The house has fascinated us since the early days of Haighteration. We shot the above photo in March, and a few months later, we teamed up with local realtor Eileen Bermingham to try to figure out exactly what happened to this aged beauty. According to city records, the 3-unit house was built in 1900. It was purchased by one Eunice Booker in 1975 for $51,500 (!!!). As Eileen notes:

There were plans in the mid 1990s to do a horizontal addition, and [the Department of Building Inspection] was told in 2008 that the owner planned to do a major rehab. But the string of renewed and expired permits, along with the building’s present condition, obviously points to a rehab that was never done... The building was tagged as hazardous in April 2010, but it's still boarded up and padlocked.

We tried to track down Ms. Booker, but didn't have any success. And without any more information, the story just kinda died. Then, this morning, we were walking down Waller, when we noticed THIS: Looks the same as the photo from March, right? Look closer. Curtains. Don't. Open. Themselves. This is officially terrifying. Is a ghost living in the house? Are there homeless squatters in there, or raccoons with opposable thumbs? Has Eunice Booker returned from her undisclosed location? We'll keep an eye on this one -- but probably from a distance. Because frankly we are pretty freaked out right now.
