The area around Oak and Octavia Streets was shut down to traffic Thursday morning, as police and medical teams investigated a deadly collision between a car-carrying truck and a pedestrian shuttle van.

The accident occurred some time around 6:30am on Octavia just north of Oak, where a truck apparently drove up on a median and struck someone in the east-most lane. According to the Examiner, a witness on the scene says the truck may have been swerving to avoid a UCSF van full of doctors. Update: It's now being reported that the truck actually collided with the van, causing one passenger to eject. See the bottom of this post for updates. Traffic was shut down between Fell, Page, Laguna, and Gough as police investigated the scene. Though details of the accident aren't confirmed, we did spot broken glass and a UCSF van at the scene, as well as what appeared to be the victim, still pinned under the truck. We also spoke with an SFPD officer who confirmed that the victim "didn't make it." We'll update with any further details. In the meantime, you should definitely avoid this area if it's part of your regular morning commute. Update 8:45am: SF Appeal reports that the victim may not have been a pedestrian, but a passenger on the UCSF van -- "a white man in his 40s [who] was ejected from the shuttle bus and died at the scene." The Appeal adds that two females and one male on the bus also suffered minor injuries. We'll update with any more info. Update 5:25pm: Several news sites are reporting that the victim is 52-year-old Kevin Mack, a psychiatrist who had an office at UCSF. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
