A huge new mural went up on the plywood in front of 435 Duboce this week -- but look closely and you'll notice some unexpected messages.

The mural, a collaboration between artists Zio Ziegler and Ian Ross, features imagery evocative of, oh, let's say, early American peoples. A leopard, a snake, sunflowers, masks, an owl, skulls, jungle plants. There's also a bicycle tire -- perhaps a nod to the Wiggle -- and a couple of ladders, which may reference the painters themselves? (Click any photo to view a larger version in a new window.) On closer inspection, though, a number of written messages appear. "GARAGE FEATURES CHARGING STATIONS FOR ELECTRIC + HYBRID VEHICLES" "ALL INTERIOR WALLS ARE CONSTRUCTED WITH QUIETROCK ACOUSTICAL SOUNDBOARD" "DETAILED WITH FLOOR TO CEILING WESTERN WINDOW & DOOR SYSTEMS COVETED BY MANY AS A MANUFACTURING MARVEL" "UNPARALLELED ACCESS TO TRANSIT AND PARKS" "INTEGRATED SMART HOME AUTOMATION & CONTROL SYSTEMS" It turns out, the mural seems to have been commissioned by Doorman Property Management, the firm that will be leasing out the property at 435 Duboce. When completed in January of 2013, the building will offer "six unique new San Francisoc residences & one glass storefront," according to the location's new website. So the mural appears to be serving two purposes: de-uglifying the building during construction, and promoting the property to potential residents. So is it art? Is it advertising? We don't know. What we do know is, it'll make your wait for the N a little more pleasant. Especially this weekend, when your wait for the N will be endless.
