Vapor Room Closes Tonight, Followed By Party, Funeral
The time has come. The Vapor Room, the medical marijuana dispensary at 607A Haight Street, will be shutting its doors for good tonight.

As we reported earlier this month, the Vapor Room has been targeted by the Department of Justice in its ongoing crackdown on California dispensaries. According to the Vapor Room, the reason cited for the shutdown is the location's proximity to the Duboce Park playground. Presumably the DOJ is trying to address the well-documented epidemic of children slipping away from their parents' supervision at the park, sneaking away from the playground, wandering north two blocks, then east a block, sweet-talking their way past the Vapor Room's doorman and using fake IDs to buy marijuana? Or something? Anyway, the V.R. will close up shop tonight at 9pm for the last time. But it's not all doom and gloom. Head to Maiden Lane's Otis Lounge tonight for the Vapor Room Farewell Party.
"The Vapor Room Cooperative invites you to celebrate over 8 wonderful years of service to our members, the cannabis community and the City of San Francisco. Though we are forced to close our doors, we do so with heavy hearts and invite you to remember the good times with us."
The party starts at 10pm at the Otis Lounge, 25 Maiden Lane (near Union Square). Then, tomorrow, a coalition called Save Safe Access will be holding a mock funeral procession "in response to the outrageous federal assault on medical cannabis patients and providers." The procession starts, appropriately, at Haight and Steiner at 4pm, with a New Orleans-style jazz funeral replete with "coffins" (representing the closed MCDs) and a marching band. The participants will then work their way to the Federal Building at Golden Gate Avenue, where they'll hold a 5pm press conference. Thanks to Martin and the Vapor Room crew for their good work serving the community since 2004. They haven't officially announced plans for what comes next, but if they do, we'll let you know.
