In Bed, a small concept store created by the folks at H.D. Buttercup, softly opened this past Saturday at 597 Hayes.
The large 50,000 ft² H.D. Buttercup is located at 4th & Townsend and offers everything you could want from a furniture store that prides itself on the motto "this is no ordinary furniture store." But like many things in Hayes Valley, this new store is their way of trying something a little different. We met with Carly Young, the Store Manager, and she explained the genesis behind the idea. "We have two stores," Carly began. "One here and one in LA. Both are huge so we wanted to use this opportunity to create something small; a tranquil, small home." As the name suggests, In Bed focuses on mattresses and linens. To be specific, organic mattress and all-natural linens. Carly added that "all linens and mattresses are organic with no synthetic materials used." You can find brands like Rakshabella, a line of bedding from India that's made of organic cotton with hand-blocked designs. Kerry Cassill (located down in Laguna Beach) and Signoria (100% Egyptian cotton made in Italy) are also prominently displayed in the store. And brands like Bella Notte and Libeco will be featured in the next few weeks.
One thing that's particularly unique about In Bed is that they're not the only people using the space.
Louesa Roebuck, a florist who has designed arrangements for Bar Jules, Bar Agricole, Bar Tartine and Chez Panisse, is utilizing a back room as both a working station and showroom.
So how does a florist end up partnering with a mattress store?
"I met the owner of H.D. Buttercup at Big Daddy when I was working with Remodelista" Louesa began. "He liked what I did at the event and asked if I wanted to join up for this opportunity."
She was inspired by the concept of local and organic show food at Chez Panisse and applied that to flowers. "This space is a physical manifestation of what I do" she added.
Her hours aren't set yet, but she'll probably be in the store on Wednesday-Sunday, when she's not working private events or weddings.
Let's get back to those mattresses for a minute.
All mattresses sold at this store are made from wool and cotton created in California. And each one is made-to-order from their factory in Yuba City.
Carly said, "It takes 7-10 days to make the mattress and get it down here, but you will have you mattress delivered to you within two weeks."
H.D. Buttercup's Division Manager, Aaron Resnik, just happened to be in the store at the time and explained that the reason their mattresses are made-to-order has to do with their desire to keep it organic.
He said that "mattresses become unorganic when they are stored in a warehouse, so to honor the integrity/purity of the product, we make them to order and by hand."
Carly said that Hayes Valley was the perfect location for what they wanted to do with this store. "Evan Cole (CEO) and H.D. Buttercup are really excited about this location. Hayes Valley is having another Renaissance and we want to be a part of it." The hours of the store are 11-7 (Mon-Fri) and 10-6 (Sat & Sun). They're planning on hosting a launch party in October and will be sharing those details in the next few weeks.
