Hayes Valley's second-oldest shop is celebrating a milestone -- 25 years in business in the neighborhood.
Inside Scoop ran a profile this week of Joe Sattler, owner of Moishe's Pippic, the Chicago-themed deli at 425 Hayes Street. In it, Sattler reflects on the early days of Moishe's, which was opened in 1987 by founder Russell Kassman. Sattler was Kassman's banker at the time, and is not from Chicago but Brazil -- but when the deli went defunct in 1990, Sattler purchased it from Kassman. Back then, in the years before the earthquake-damaged freeway was dismantled, Hayes Valley was a "war zone," as Sattler puts it. Now he marvels at being surrounded by $3,000 rent and stores selling $300 shoes.
