Welcome (Back), Derby of San Francisco
It's time to welcome Derby of San Francisco to the Haight. The heritage workwear label, which has been around since 1961 (with a few brief reinventions and hiatuses), is opening its one-and-only physical store at 1472 Haight.

We didn't know this, but: apparently Derby is an old-school staple of sartorial San Francisco. It originated as a workwear brand in the early 1960s and was eventually, in the '70s and '80s, co-opted as an expression of hip-hop street wear. (Think Tims, Carhartt, etc.). Now, after being shut down for about 15 years after the early '90s, the brand is back and re-launching its classic look. The staple is the Derby jacket (the "classic"), which features a solid, boxy Carhartt look and a trademark paisley jacket lining. (The same paisley lining pattern is used for wallpaper in the shop.)
The store also features a cable car. That's right, an actual cable car. One of the guys running the shop happened across an old O'Farrell & Hyde car that MUNI was junking, sawed it in half, chopped the end off and stuck it in the store for a clothing display. A-plus for creativity, we say.
In any case, welcome to the neighborhood, Derby of San Francisco. It's nice to have you back.
