Today may mark the 12th day of the 12th month of the 12th year of the 21st century, but for Hayes Valley Farm (450 Laguna), it also signifies a day of festivity and education. The interim neighborhood farm will play host to a variety events as a part of a worldwide celebration known as Interdependence Day.

The event is a follow-up to the Global Day of Climate Action (held on 10/10/10), when the goal was to shine a light to the need for everyone to join together to lower the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. According to 350 Science, "350 parts per million is what many scientists, climate experts, and progressive national governments are now saying is the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere." We're currently at 392 ppm. Today's festivities are intended to spotlight San Francisco's growing urban agriculture movement and its potential to help address the CO2 problem. But Hayes Valley Farm intern Vanessa Green also hopes today's event will spark another kind of food for thought in attendees. “I think as a philosophical principle, interdependence is all about [how] everything [has a] relationship to everything else," she told us. "To Hayes Valley Farm on 12/12/12 it’s about creating awareness of urban permaculture, permaculture being permanent agriculture." It’s for those reasons, she told us, that the farm will be hosting the following events: Breadmaking with Lisaruth (12pm – 5pm) Join Lisaruth for a Cob Oven Breadmaking workshop. According to the event listing, there will be skill share opportunities and honey tastings and sales. Outdoor Yoga with Brandon (12pm) As the event listing states, this particular class will "follow a slow and intentional hatha flow highlighting an insistent (maybe even annoying) focus on breath."
The Compost Heap (12:12pm) Join Monica at the compost heap to learn about the 18-day hot compost method the farm is "using to turn a big pile of kitchen scraps and garden clippings into nutrient rich soil for the gardens and nursery at Hayes Valley Farm." Herbal Honey Infusions and Health (1pm) Riyanna will be at the beehive exhibit teaching healthy remedies using local honeys infused with native plants.  The Peerless Potato Too with D.L. Vanini (3pm) HVF regular D.L. Vanini will be leading a deep discussion on the peerless potato. Attendees will also be able to tour the farm and learn about the research as well as the methods he is using to grow potatoes in San Francisco.
