Gangs of San Francisco: A Hayes Valley Hidden Gem

Tucked away between Market and Rose, Gangs of San Francisco occupies the unassuming storefront at 66 Gough St. The illusive shop is only open from noon to 6pm on weekends, and is one of the most unique and interesting displays of city pride we've found thus far.

The awning is emblazoned with only an acronym, and 90% of the time you'll find nothing here but a looming, locked iron gate. Inside, the shop itself is like stepping through time - the walls are covered in historical photos of our fair city, as well as large portraits (possibly of your great-great grandmother). The overall d├ęcor makes us feel like we're about to suit up for bare-knuckle boxing in the 1800's.

The brainchild of Laureano Faedi, a renaissance man originally from Buenos Aires, the storefront itself has recently brought to the masses what had been only available online. Faedi researches and designs every silk screen print himself, laying whimsical, vintage-looking SF neighborhood logos on t-shirts, sweatshirts, tank tops, and pint glasses.

Often manning the shop's helm is Zach Bruner (pictured above), whose warm and unobtrusive local attitude makes the experience all the better.

These designs are inspired by San Francisco's rich history, and represent nearly every corner of the Bay Area. Hail from North Beach? Pick up a tee emblazoned with the Devil's Acre Barbary Coast. You can celebrate your undying love of the microbrew with a Richmond Brawlers Beer Town pint glass, or represent your inner child with a Playland at the Beach design (or get one for your actual child - kid sizes are available).

The brilliance of their selective hours makes a trip to the one-of-a-kind shop feel like you've accomplished something rare, like moving through the wardobe to Narnia. The vibe, though, is pure San Francisco. Make a visit part of your weekend, Hayes Valley. We're lucky to count Gangs of San Francisco as a treasure in our backyard.

Never miss a story.
