Introducing Artful Gentleman, A Unique Custom Clothing Shop
Hidden in the old sewing room of the McRoskey Mattress building at 1687 Market Street is Artful Gentleman, a new custom clothing shop dedicated to making the men and women of San Francisco look great.

Recently, Jake Wall, a co-founder of Artful Gentleman along with Nate Johnson, led us through the chic workspace and explained the process behind the company's services. The Artful Gentleman team typically works with clients on an appointment basis, with the first visit taking about an hour. Jake and Lead Style Agent Cody Kirkpatrick’s initial goal is to get a sense of who you are, and how your tastes and style icons will ultimately shape the pieces that are created custom for each order. Whether you look up to Joseph Gordon-Levitt, KD Lang, or Prince, they know exactly how to hone in on your needs. Every possible detail is tailored just for you, considering not just the way you'll look, but the way you'll feel in your creations. Their suits don't "fit" you -- their suits are made for you.
A.G. takes measurements, guides you through fabric selection, and gives you the information you'll need to shop for your style out in the real world. Your initial meeting will leave you knowing more about the way you want to look then you ever thought possible. Initially specific to custom shirting and suiting for men and women, A.G. is now expanding to dresses as well. They've already developed an impressive customer base, and even recently dressed the band The Lumineers for the 2013 Grammy Awards.

Clearly passionate and innovative, Jake knows the ins and outs of not only his business, but also the businesses that have been integral in getting A.G. off the ground. They began in Hayes Valley with pop-ups in Isotope Comics, before connecting with the McRoskey family and moving into their current, incredibly unique space. The polished, classy interior gives a mix of warmth and exclusivity from the moment you walk in the door.
Heavily involved with our LGBTQ community, the walls are adorned with "Cut From the Same Cloth," a series shot by photographer Kelly Puleio. The images feature men and women photographed wearing the same A.G. suits in their own personal and distinct styles.
The Art of the Suit
The showroom has been in operation since last Fall, and tomorrow night they're hosting an event called Modern Man Presents The Art of the Suit. Tickets include access to the rarely-seen penthouse space on the building's third floor – which we were blown away by, even before the soiree décor hit the walls. The catered fashion show/cocktail party offers a special VIP experience in the showroom itself, and gifts from many of the sponsors – everyone from San Francisco Magazine to Balvenie to TOKYObay. Student tickets are available for $20, with general admission for $30 and VIP Access for $100. So don your most dapper threads and join the fun this Friday at 7pm -- and give Artful Gentleman a big welcome, Hayes Valley style!
