Get heard: the SFMTA is soliciting feedback about the presence of bike corrals in the Haight.

Last week, representatives from a joint San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority and San Francisco State University survey group made the rounds with local business owners to pool feedback about the presence of bike corrals in the neighborhood. Bike corrals are bigger than the single, U-shaped bike racks: they're the rows of big metal hoops installed here and there (in front of FTC Skate Shop, for example, at 1632). You know, the ones that are always getting crochet-bombed? The one installed at FTC Skate and the one at Braindrops, near Central, each hold 4-5 bikes. But they take up a whole parking spot. So the city is trying to survey local business owners to see what the impact of the corrals is--only on businesses, granted. The city has added, by its own reckoning, 2,800 bicycle racks to the city over the past few years, and has seen a spike in the biking population of 71% between '06 and '11. So they're serious about this. What do you think? Open feedback can go straight to the SFMTA's own Matt Lasky, at [email protected]. Did you also know that if you're sick of hauling your bike upstairs to jam it in the laundry room, you can call the MTA and ask them to put a rack in on the sidewalk for you, or install it yourself? Deets here, or call 415-701-4500. Oh yeah, and we found this map fascinating. Ride safe, don't fall over.
