New in the Neighborhood: Wiggle Bicycles
If you've zipped around the corner of Waller and Steiner on your bicycle recently, you may have caught a glimpse of a small shop that soon might become your two-wheeler's best friend. Introducing Wiggle Bicycles.

The shop has been open for about a week on the Steiner side of 501 Waller, the same building as Clipper Construction. In fact, the shop began as an offshoot of Clipper itself.
Wiggle Bicycles is managed by Garret Peters, a Florida native who has a long history with the Lower Haight. In his younger years, Garret would save up money to make an annual summertime trek to San Francisco to visit his uncle, who lived at Germania and Fillmore. To Garret, the Lower Haight seemed like the center of the city -- and San Francisco the center of the universe. He aspired to live here one day. At the same time, Garret developed an early affinity for bicycles. He recalls owning "junky BMX bikes" which he would piece together and repair as needed, and getting into more serious road riding when he got to college. He also volunteered at a community bicycle shop, which gave him experience in both bike maintenance and customer service. About two years ago, Garret decided to make the leap and move to San Francisco. He was particularly drawn to the bike culture here, and the possibility of living in a city where he wouldn't have to own a car. Garret found an apartment near Buena Vista Park and got a job working at the DeYoung Museum on various projects, but his love of bicycles and desire to run his own business persisted. Then, fate intervened. His uncle, who worked in construction, was friends with Mat Palmer of Clipper Construction. Mat had started running a small bicycle repair operation out of the company's storefront business, Clipper Repair, but found that he no longer had time to operate it himself. Garret's uncle thought it would be a great opportunity for his nephew, and connected the two. So late last year, Garret quit his job at the DeYoung and began his new role as proprietor of a bike repair shop. About six months ago, Garret started transforming the storage area behind Clipper Repair into a viable storefront and workspace. That meant clearing out the space, sanding and oiling the floors, and giving the walls a new paint job.
The store now offers full service repairs and cycling accessories. Garret won't be selling bikes, at least not yet, but hopes to expand in the future. For now, he's welcoming all riders and style of bikes, with all sorts of repair needs. He carries a number of the most standard accessories, from reflective bands to anti-theft skewers, but can order special items as necessary and usually have them in stock in about a day. Wiggle Bicycles has only been open for about a week, and he's still figuring out "the flow of the shop," but Garret is already encouraged by the response he has received. "Through this project I've found that San Franciscans have been very supportive," he told us. He's happy to be doing what he's doing -- and doing it where he's doing it. "I want to do quality work, and make a lot of friends along the way... And there's no place in the world I'd rather be than San Francisco."
Wiggle Bicycles is open from 8am to 6:30pm Tuesday through Friday, and 10am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday. The website is still a work in progress, but when it launches you'll be able to find it at http://wigglebicycles.com.
