Breaking News: Haight Might Get Better Cell ServiceFlickr/bizmac
If you're a local homeowner, chances are good you've received the news that AT&T is trying to expand cell service in the Haight. Could it be true?

The notice issued to nearby residents, from the San Francisco Planning Department, announces that the planning commission will be hearing a proposal from AT&T to mount 12 panel antennae on the roof of 1400 Haight (at Masonic), also known as the Jammin' On Haight building. The hearing will be held Thursday August 8 at 12 noon, in room 400 at City Hall. If you have oppositions to voice, you have until then to voice your concerns and appeal the proposal. The proposal includes not only installing but also disguising the antennae: "Antennas would be visible, but partially screened to minimize the appearance of cabling, and then painted to match the existing building." According to city records, this isn't the first time the owner of 1400 Haight as applied to the city for a cell installation: in 2004, an application was filed with the city for a conditional use permit to install 6 cell panel antennae: the application was turned away as incomplete and withdrawn by the city. Also according to city records, this is the first substantial (read: permit-required) improvement to the site or upgrade of the building in 29 years, barring the installation of an ATM in 2007 that was installed without city approval. Starting August 1 you'll be able to view the architectural plans for the project on the Planning Department's list of meeting agendas, right here. In addition to addressing the city Planning Commission with concerns, you can contact the applicant, an AT&T contractor named Kelly Pepper, at [email protected].
