Dogs of the Upper Haight: Part 4 in a Series
Carter, Uppercasing. Uppercasing, Carter. Carter's about 30 in dog years. He's some kind of pit bull mutt. He's got the kind of face that anyone with a central nervous system has to love. But there's more to him than that.

Basically, if you've ever seen Carter around at the panhandle, you'll notice that there's something off about his gait. His legs seem floppy and uncoordinated, like a puppy who is also a little bit drunk. He can run a bit (okay, it's more of a galumph), but if he tries to stop or turn too quickly, his legs often collapse and he flops down onto his side. His person says his doctors think his problem is neurological in nature. Whatever the cause, it's likely from Carter being so underfed before he was rescued. If you ever meet him, you'll notice his head is still way too big for his body, like a puppy. That's because he's probably supposed to be a lot bigger. Since we first met him a few years ago, his running and walking skills have increased dramatically. His person takes him for walks all the way through the panhandle almost every day, so Carter can practice getting up to full speed chasing sticks and bugs and occasionally other dogs. When we first met him, if Carter wanted to say hi, he'd walk over and flop down on his side onto your feet. Now, he stands and gets petted like any other dog. Here's our favorite photo of Carter:
He lives in Cole Valley with his person, and he enjoys long walks in the park, small sticks that don't throw him off balance, and laying in the grass. We love you, Carter!
