Here Comes a Faster 5-FultonFlickr/Ocu-Master
For those that take the crowded 5-Fulton bus to and from downtown every day, some proposed changes could soon offer sweet relief.

This Fall, Muni will be rolling out a pilot program to test a new line -- the 5-Limited. The 5-Limited would run on weekdays until 7pm, featuring electric buses making only select stops between 6th Avenue and Market Street. Stops would be made only at major intersections every five or six blocks, including Van Ness, Fillmore, Divisadero, Masonic, Shrader, and Arguello. If you need to make a local stop though, don't worry. Motor buses will continue to travel the regular 5 route, making all local stops at all times of day. And both motor and electric-powered buses would make all stops on evenings and weekends. In addition to the new schedule, Muni plans some improvements along the route. Those include extending bus zones, removing or replacing various bus stops, altering some turn lanes and removing parking spots. All this is estimated to increase the line's capacity by 20-30%, which should reduce crowding. It should also reduce trip times by 20%, and improve safety. Tonight, the SFMTA will hold an outreach meeting to discuss the proposed changes, and the public is invited to attend. It's scheduled for 6:30pm to 8pm tonight at the African American Arts & Culture Complex, 762 Fulton Street between Webster and Laguna. Thanks Sean B. for the tip!
