We wanted to tell you about this yesterday, but the stabbing at McDonald's took precedence. On October 6th, 1967, 46 years ago, a funeral was staged to mark the end of the Hippie scene at Haight/Ashbury.The funeral was held a year to the day after the Love Pageant was staged to protest the state ban on LSD.The mock funeral's message was that the scene was too crowded, and that instead of flocking here, you should "Stay where you are! Bring the revolution to where you live." By the end of the summer, the hippies mostly left, and the scene took a turn for the worse. You can watch a video over at PBS, and of course, you can also watch PBS's amazing Summer of Love documentary if you haven't already seen it.
