Gyro Xpress Opening Next WeekGyro Xpress at old K*Pop location (photo: Roy McKenzie)

We just received a media release for Gyro Xpress'  grand opening, the new casual Mediterranean restaurant replacing the failed Korean food restaurant K*Pop  at the corner of 18th and Castro  (499 Castro Street).

Gyro Xpress owner Koch Salgut plans to open the week of February 3rd, so we could see it open as early as this coming Monday with an official Grand Opening date of Saturday, February 8th.

Salgut plans to have the restaurant open every day of the year from 11AM to 3AM, in time for lunch and open late for Castro revelers. Salgut is no stranger to the restaurant business having owned three other restaurants in the past including Ararat Mediterranean (2006-2008) which used to be in the space that Poesia (4072 18th Street) now occupies.

Despite high turn over for the corner location, Salgut is optimistic about his new venture and wants to make it work. He has enlisted the help of Gary Virginia (Cafe Flore manager and a Grand Marshal of the 2012 Gay Pride Parade) to help raise visibility of Gyro Xpress. Virginia has a ribbon cutting ceremony planned for the Grand Opening on Feb 8th which includes special guests and performances by Gypsy Love and Kippy Marks.

We wish the best of luck to Koch and hope he can succeed where many have not.
