The Board of Supervisors voted yesterday afternoon to approve legislation that will allow a large grocery store to be built at 555 Fulton Street.

The legislation, introduced by District 5 Supervisor London Breed, extends a special area called the Fulton Street Grocery Store Special Use District for an additional five years. Within that district, "a neighborhood-serving grocery store of moderate size" will be allowed, despite an existing ban on formula retail use in the surrounding area. Yesterday the Board voted unanimously to approve the legislation. The developers of 555 Fulton will now be able to begin demolition at the location. There's still more work to be done before a formula retailer (Trader Joe's? Whole Foods? Safeway?) is officially allowed at the site, but yesterday's action removed at least one major hurdle. We'll keep you posted as construction gets underway.
