Changes Proposed For 6, 71 Muni LinesFlickr/warzauwynn
The SFMTA is proposing changes to a slew of Muni routes in the hopes of speeding up public transit in San Francisco.

More than 70 different Muni lines would see changes to schedules and stops as part of the Transit Effectiveness Project, which seeks to make Muni "more efficient, reliable, safe and comfortable for its existing 700,000 daily passengers." In our neck of the woods, the 6 Parnassus line would see an altered route through the Upper Haight. Instead of turning on Masonic as it does now, it would continue along Haight all the way to Stanyan, then turn south, and continue westward on Parnassus -- a change which will require the installation of new overhead wiring on Stanyan. Eventually, the 6 line would be extended all the way to West Portal Station. Meanwhile, the 71 Haight line would be decommissioned and replaced by the 71L, which makes fewer stops between Market Street and Ocean Beach and is thus speedier. The 71L would run all day long, instead of just at peak hours. It would continue making limited stops between Market and Stanyan, but would resume local stops from Stanyan westward. It would also run more frequently. Next week, Muni will be hosting a community meeting to solicit feedback on the proposed changes for these two lines and the overall project. It takes place Tuesday, February 18th at 6pm at the Park Branch Library (1833 Page, between Cole and Shrader). If you can't make it, you can also leave feedback at tellmuni.com.
