District 5 Gets Ready for 4/20Camden Avery/Hoodline
After much public comment on last year's most official unofficial holiday in the Haight, and a round of inquiry from residents this year, Supervisor Breed's office is preparing a plan for this year's festivities.

4/20 this year falls on a Sunday, so residents are anticipating as busy a year as we had last year, although this year it will also be, interestingly, Easter Sunday, which we're hoping results in some interesting costume choice. The city is in the odd position of having to make official (transport, SFPD, toilet and ambulance) preparations for the neighborhood's single biggest de facto holiday, one which is not only patently unofficial but also explicitly about doing drugs on city property. There isn't much of a precedent for the city making an official position on 4/20. But word is finally out, by way of Conor Johnston, from Supervisor Breed's office, that plans are in the works to help manage the crowds this year. In an email to local residents, Johnston said that Supervisor Breed had met with SFPD, SFMTA and SF Rec and Parks to begin discussions about what could be done. He said that the meeting was the first of several, and that successive conversations would address specifically what kind of preparations could be made. Supervisor Breed's office expects to make a presentation to the neighborhood, probably the week before 4/20, according to Johnston, to present what kind of measures to expect. He said there would also probably be another meeting, closer to the middle of April, to include residents and local stakeholders.
