Neighborhood breakfast and lunch go-to Kate's Kitchen has launched a new dinner menu and evening hours, with yesterday marking the first night of service.
The new dinner menu has a loosely Southern theme and pricing that owner Hasan Khader says matches the restaurant's popular, and affordable, daytime offering. If you'll recall, Kate's recently dabbled in dinner service with Chaparral, a more high-end concept by former Mission Beach Cafe executive chef Thomas Martinez.
Chaparral launched in October of last year, but closed down in March after just 5 months in business. Khader says that the closure came as a joint decision between himself and Martinez, with both parties agreeing that the fine-dining menu and price point weren't the best fit for the space. However, Khader maintains that Martinez is an "excellent" chef with whom he's still on good terms.
The comfort food menu includes starters like kale salad ($8.50), spicy shrimp n' grits ($10) and Texas fries (potatoes topped with bacon, spring onions, jalapeño, salsa, cheddar and sour cream, $7.50). Entrees run the gamut from fried chicken ($13.50) to lamb shoulder ($16.50) to seared wild shrimp tostadas ($13.50). Sides like smoked ham hocks with red beans over rice ($6.50), collard greens ($4) and cheesy grits ($2.50) round out the homey theme. (Here's a look at the full menu via @DanJackson415).
Khader says that they also have a great wine selection in place that showcases local organic wines. All of them, he said, are available to sample before you make your order.
