NOW! Community Festival Launching This MonthPhoto: NOW! Community Festival
A weeklong celebration of community projects called NOW! is coming to a neighborhood near you.

From Sunday April 27th to Saturday May 3rd, the neighborhoods surrounding the Panhandle will play host to a slew of community-related events. The organizers describe NOW! as "a community festival that's essentially a cross between [freespace] and SXSW." For one week only, the aim is to have the community come together and create programs and events "that will enrich the neighborhoods around the Panhandle."

Among the organizers are a group of University of San Francisco students and professors who've been studying the history of the Haight-Ashbury community.

Activities on the books include a pop-up parklet on Haight Street, a bike-in movie night, a gardening workshop at the New Liberation Community Garden, and a free dinner at Cyprian's Center. There will also be free flower giveaways and lots of opportunities to decorate the streets with sidewalk chalk.

NOW!'s headquarters for the week will be at the William McKinley statue in the Panhandle, which will serve as a hub from noon to 6pm every day.

Have an idea for a project? Contact NOW! by tomorrow (April 17th) to be added to their calendar.

Don't have a project, but want to volunteer? Shoot them an email at [email protected] and they'll happily put you to work. If you simply want to stay in the loop, you can do so by following NOW! on Facebook or Twitter

We'll see you around the neighborhood at the end of the month, undoubtedly with flowers in our hair.
