Suspicious Death On Page Street [Updated]Photo: Anonymous

A man was found dead in his home on Page Street yesterday evening, and police are treating the case as a possible homicide.

According to SFPD, a woman arrived home last night just before 7pm to her house on the 600 block of Page between Steiner and Fillmore, and found her husband deceased.  A police spokesman originally classified the case to media as a possible suicide last night.

However, this morning police say that the city medical examiner determined the death to be "suspicious," and the case is now being investigated by the SFPD homicide unit.

One anonymous Hoodline reader sent in the above photo from the scene last night.

"There were 3 cop cars and one fire truck outside on Page btwn Steiner and Fillmore. Then the [Medical Examiner] pulled up," the tipster wrote. "A woman was crying on the steps."

Police have not yet released the identity of the victim, describing him only as a 48-year-old white male.  We'll update with any additional details.

Update, 11:50am, 4/9/14: The medical examiner has confirmed the name of the deceased for us: Gerald Smith.

Update, 12/1/2015: The SFPD amended this case in August 2014 to be a suicide by hanging. According the medical examiner, the victim was found by his wife partially suspended over a ceiling support beam.
