The fire that sent one house up in flames and damaged two others just south of Duboce Park yesterday afternoon displaced 10 residents from their homes, according to the Examiner, which reports that damages to the properties will top $3 million.
As we reported yesterday, the fire originated at a house which contains two units, 34 and 36 Walter Street. The fire gutted the building, and caused what fire officials have estimated to be $225,000 in lost property and $2 million in overall structural damages.
Winds fanned the fire, which spread to partially damage the houses on either side of the burning building. The building at 30-32 Walter suffered about $1 million in damages after the roof ignited and had to be torn off by firefighters. The building to the other side, 38-40 Walter, also incurred less severe damages.
The blaze left all three buildings uninhabitable, with at least 9 adults and one child among the displaced. We'll be sure to keep you posted about any fundraisers or other opportunities to help them out in the coming days and weeks.
Two firefighters suffered injuries while combating the blaze, but both injuries are reported as minor. Many thanks to them and to the dozens of additional firefighters who prevented the blaze from spreading even further.
For all your renters and homeowners out there, this is a good time to make sure you have an iron-clad insurance policy in place that covers loss of property, damages and displacement costs.
