Word is out and the finishing touches are finally going up this week at the long-vacant former Asqew Grill storefront at 1607 Haight Street.
A peek through the window reveals the status of the space, which has been empty since Asqew left a year and a half ago:

The business has applied for a sign permit, repainted the storefront this week, and is giving every indication of being the swankest new taco spot on the street.

Located directly across the street from El Faro and a mere two blocks from Zona Rosa, it remains to be seen what Street Taco will offer in the way of original cuisine, but the sign advertises "Mexico City street food," which hopefully means lots of mole and nopales.

Tentative menus for the new restaurant are unavailable for the nonce, but we can tell you that ownership of the restaurant is held by a company called DF LA Capital, LLC, a San Francisco corporation owned by Victor Juarez. Other restaurants owned by DF LA Capital include Casa Mexicana, Azteca and La Fonda.

Though Juarez's recent record seems to be squeaky clean, he was apparently brought up five-and-a-half years ago on charges of labor violations, a story that made the rounds on SFist and Eater at the time. He was charged with withholding payment, denying overtime payment and denying breaks, charges won by at least two of the four plaintiffs against him at the time.

In the meantime it looks like he's cleaned up his act. In any case, we're excited to see what new offerings the street might have in store.

The scheduled opening date is still yet to be announced.
