A posting went up on Craigslist at the end of last month putting the now defunct Pica Pica Maize Kitchen (3970 17th St) at 17th and Castro Chevron Station back on the market. A message went up in the window of the restaurant in January mentioning the space was temporarily closed for maintenance and repairs. Turns out the location just wasn't cutting it and the restaurant closed up shop only 9 months after opening in March of 2013. Pica Pica Maize Kitchen still operates their Valencia and 15th Street location. According to the Craigslist post, the fully-equipped, state-of-the-art, beer-and-wine-licensed, 1800-sqft restaurant has undergone a price reduction bringing the lease down to approximately $5400 a month (from what, is not mentioned). The space is tucked just off the beaten path of the main Castro Street drag behind the Chevron Station. When the restaurant opened last year we didn't even realize anything was happening at that location until Tablehopper broke the news. Hopefully, whoever moves into the space will provide a compelling enough service and have a strong enough marketing plan (including signage?) to bring Castro resident or tourist dollars in.
