Tonight: Grand Reopening And Artist’s Reception At Big Umbrella StudiosImage: Daria Gabriel / Big Umbrella Studios
Feel like getting some culture in tonight? Swing by Big Umbrella Studios and check out their new show “The Poetics of Light,” featuring works by Daria Gabriel.

Doubling as a “grand reopening,” the event marks a milestone: former BUS Director of Communications (and current Divisadero Merchants Association president) Solange Gabriel has recently become owner of the studio and has made a few changes.

“We’re still committed to committed to providing support to the local arts community, but we’re evolving into an arts incubator. We want to provide resources, tools, business opportunities, workshops, and mentorship programs so we can help artists and other creative professionals develop sustainable businesses and careers.”
Prior to these developments, BUS was more of an artist’s collective, a shared space where folks could work on their own projects and use the resources provided. The new setup is geared toward providing more direct support and mentorship to fledgling artists who’d like to see their careers take off.

The studio hopes to work with between six and ten individuals for anywhere from three to 18 months at a time. The monthly membership fee will remain at $250, but Solange hopes to one day support artists via crowd-sourced fundraising campaigns.

The show tonight is retrospective of Gabriel’s work (who, incidentally, is Solange’s mother), and spans time spent in New Orleans, California, and France. The artist received her MFA from Claremont Graduate University and her work “primarily focuses on the poetics of space, light and color.”

Stop by t reception tonight between 6pm to 10 pm. Appetizers and beverages will be served throughout the evening, and tunes will be provided by Argon Volt. And if you can’t make it tonight, you can still see the show through August 8th.
