A man was found unconscious near the intersection of Church and Duboce Sunday morning, and police are investigating the case as an attempted murder.

Yesterday, San Francisco General Hospital officials asked for the public's help in identifying the man, who was found on the ground near the intersection around 7:30am Sunday.  He had no wallet or any other form of identification on him, and the cause of his injuries was unclear.

Within hours of the photo being circulated in the media, one of the man's neighbors recognized him and called his family, who then went to San Francisco General Hospital to identify him.  (Ed. note 8/13/14: out of respect for the victim's friends and family who have asked that the image no longer be shared, we've removed the photo of the victim that was shared by the hospital. He has been identified as Bryan Higgins, 31. More updates here.)

Today, an SFPD spokesman told Hoodline that evidence indicates the man was the victim of an assault with a deadly weapon.  The nature of the attack is still under investigation, but the case is being treated as an attempted murder.

Police are seeking the public's help in locating a suspect described as a white male who was wearing a gray hoodie, roughly late-20s to early-30s in age.
