Happy High Herbs, the herb shop at Haight and Masonic, has recently undergone some changes. Its psychedelic day-glow paint job has been swapped out for more earthy, subdued hues, the woozy creature perched atop a mushroom is no more, and the name has been changed to Twisted Thistle Apothecaire.
Remember the old aesthetic? It looked something like this:

We reached out to co-owners Naomi and Ethan Franc to find out what was behind the change.

Basically, the pair realized that the shop's aesthetic was misrepresenting their business. They told us that they often got mistaken for a head shop or a dispensary, when they're really more about herbal remedies for general "fun and health," as well as helping to educate their customers about herbal remedies for a variety of issues.

Here's what they specialize in, according to the Francs:

  • Discovering the wide array of aphrodisiacs that nature has to offer and why you might use one over another
  • Different natural herbs that can be smoked (not including Tobacco or Marijuana)
  • Addiction solutions, whether you are trying to give up tobacco, reduce cannabis use, or even alcohol, opiates, barbiturates, etc., herbs can really help support you while you are taking these steps as well as replenish what some of these things can deplete from the body
  • Some amazingly effective herbs for natural pain relief
  • Fire and flow toys, hula hoops
  • A big health section

The shop's new image is still a little trippy, and still plenty Haight Street, but it definitely looks more grown-up:

Even though they only hung the Apothecarie sign yesterday, the space has sported the new paint job for about a week now. And since the change has been made, the Francs tell us that the shop hasn't been mistaken for a place to score some drugs even once, a fact which Naomi and Ethan are very pleased with.

Head over and check it out for yourself.
