We've long known that 580 Hayes, the building on the corner of Hayes and Laguna that houses the family-owned Mediterranean restaurant Hayes & Kebab, was to be torn down and replaced with a 5-story mixed-use building. This summer, we learned that the restaurant would be vacating its space by the end of September, and time has certainly flown by.

Hayes & Kebab's last day will be this Sunday, September 28th, but there is some good news for falafel fans: according to a sign in the restaurant's window, it will be reopening in the same space in spring of 2016. An employee confirmed the news,  saying that although the owners are still trying to find an interim spot, Hayes & Kebab would "definitely" be returning to Hayes Valley in 2016.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing support and are looking forward to seeing you again," reads the sign in the window, which also extends an invitation to a farewell BBQ on the patio from 4pm-7pm on Sunday.

Though the restaurant is set to return, it should be noted that the expansive patio, a major draw, will not. Plans for the new building include 29 residential units, three retail spaces totaling 8,000 square feet on the ground floor, and a new basement-level parking garage for 20 parking spaces.

No word on when ground will be broken on the new project, but expect construction on this corner for the foreseeable future.

In the meantime, best of luck to Bawer Tekin and the rest of the family behind Hayes & Kebab, who are surely thrilled to be returning. As Tekin told us back in August, "We were born in Hayes Valley and we plan to stay here."
