The first leg of the Rainbow Honor Walk was dedicated earlier today with reps from KTVU and the usual politicos including Supervisor Scott Wiener, Senator Mark Leno, and Bevan Dufty. These 20 plaques honoring LGBT heroes are the first set of plaques in a series that will eventually extend all the way down Market Street from the Castro to the SF LGBT Center. We couldn't make it down there today unfortunately because we have day jobs, but it looks like, despite nine to fivers, the turn out was pretty good. One of our commenters found a typo in the Oscar Wilde plaque and the Rainbow Honor Walk Chair, David Perry, got back to us about a fix saying,

No great project is without its small 'snafus': luckily this one is correctable. The "Oscar Wilde" plaque has a small typo: "bitting" vs. "biting." I imagine that great, gay, Irish wit would think of some clever retort. I have talked to the manufacturer already and they will reinstall a corrected plaque for us before the October mega opening of the entire Castro Streetscape project.
Other readers have pointed out a few more mistakes in the plaques including the spelling on Christine Jorgensen's plaque that reads "trangendered" [sic] and the use of "record singer" on Sylvester's plaque when it should say something more like "recording artist" instead. We just reached out to David Perry for details on what the Rainbow Honor Walk board plans to do about these other typos and will update this post when we hear back. Below is a map of the locations of the plaques and a few photos shared on Twitter and a video from Instagram taken during the ceremony.
