Recycling Shuttle Service To Launch MondayPhoto: Flickr / kmardahl
If you were devastated by the eviction of the recycling center at Duboce and Market in July, we have some good news.

The owner of a Bayview recycling center will begin offering a new service on Monday, transporting would-be recyclers (and their bottles and cans) directly to his facility aboard a repurposed school bus.

As the Examiner reports, owner Ors Csaszar of Our Planet Recycling saw a growing need for such a service, as the number of recycling centers around the city has declined significantly in recent years.

So, starting on Monday, Csaszar will offer a Recycling Shuttle service, picking up passengers at two locations in the city -- one near Chinatown, and one at 2029 Market, across the street from the Safeway lot where our local recycling center formerly stood. The shuttle is a large school bus purchased from the set of the recent SF-based "Terminator" film production, with half the seats ripped out to make room for all those recyclables. There will be 28 seats remaining for passengers.

Rides on the shuttle will be offered for free, but there are a few rules. First, Csaszar is requiring a $3 deposit from customers, which will be returned at the facility. Customers must have at least one 32-gallon bag full of recyclables, and can bring up to 2 children along for the ride.

Pick-ups are slated for 2pm and 4pm daily at the 2029 Market Street location, and 5:15am and 6:15am (!) at the other pickup location near Stockton and Vallejo. Csaszar will consider other stops according to demand, so if you'd like to make a suggestion, you're encouraged to do so here.

The Examiner quotes Csaszar as saying that "Nobody has done this before... I don't know if it's going to work or not. We're going to take a chance."

Can the new service satisfy those who rely on recycling revenue for their income, without spawning the complaints about blight and noise that doomed the permanent facility?  We shall see...
