This Sunday: Alamo Square's 31st Annual Flea MarketPhoto: Nathanael Hevelone
Almost as old as the Haight Ashbury Street Fair, The Alamo Square Flea Market is celebrating its 31st straight year this Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
If you're a longtime neighborhood resident, you might be thinking,  "I've done that before," but this year has something new and special. For the first time ever, the flea market is being held in collaboration with the Western Addition Sunday Streets, making this the hottest San Francisco 'hood for both skateboarding and antiquing this weekend (we'll have more on Sunday Streets tomorrow).

Veteran flea market attendees may notice that the event is tweaked a little every year in attempts to improve upon the previous year. Different types of vendors come and go, certain streets close off, and there were even food trucks for a couple years.

Despite structural changes, though, the flea market has remained largely the same—a jumbled gathering of vendors selling everything from fedoras to Persian rugs.  Gus Hernandez, President of the Alamo Square Neighborhood Association (ASNA), tells us, "It's a true microcosm of the neighborhood, and San Francisco."

This Sunday's event is also a great time to get involved with ASNA and to learn more about neighborhood improvement efforts, such as park irrigation and the new Alamo Square restrooms being built. Come Sunday, ASNA will be posted up at Fulton and Scott to answer any of your questions, so be sure to stop by and say hello.
