Biking With Kids Workshop This SaturdayPhoto: Mark Stosberg
Walk around NoPa any weekday morning and you'll notice a number of families transporting their kids to school or daycare via bicycle. If you have a child and have been wanting to join in, but are not sure where to start, an upcoming workshop might be just the thing for you.

This Saturday, Oct. 11th, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is holding a workshop in our very own NoPa neighborhood. The topic? Biking with babies: from pregnancy to toddlers. We tracked down instructor Nancy Buffman for some more details.

Last year, according to the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, 2 percent of all school-aged children in San Francisco traveled to school via bicycle (a statistic that doubled from the previous year). Two of the schools with the highest rate of students biking to school are near the NoPa neighborhood: 4 percent of Grattan Elementary students arrive via bicycle , and 6 percent of New Traditions Elementary students do the same. All told, 17 percent of San Francisco Bicycle Coalition members bike with their kids, be it on errands or to school or playdates.

During the workshop, Nancy will be covering everything you need to know to bike safely, from toddler seats and kid helmets to rules of the road and biking while pregnant. "Many prospective parents assume that they will have to move out of the city when they have children, in part because they will have to start driving everywhere," Nancy said. "Instead, you can become a confident urban bicyclist and bike safely with your baby, preschooler and child."

The free workshop will be held this Saturday October 11th at St Cyprians Church from 2pm-4pm, and babies and toddlers are welcome. For more information, visit the workshop's page here
