Jules Maeght Gallery Readies For November OpeningRose Garrett/Hoodline
Furniture store Inside closed up shop back in April, but the space was quickly claimed for an art gallery makeover by Jules and Amelie Maeght.

If the name sounds familiar to you, you might be an art world insider: Jules is the grandson of Aimé and Marguerite Maeght, a pair who were influential in the mid-century Paris art world, opening the original Galerie Maeght in 1945 with an Henri Matisse exhibition and showing a seminal exhibition of André Breton and Marcel Duchamp's surrealist works in 1947.

Fast forward to this year, and the French family is still active in the art world, with their Maeght Foundation in St. Paul de Vence celebrating its 50th anniversary of showcasing an impressive collection of  paintings, sculptures, drawings and more modern art from the 20th century.

Jules and Amelie's new gallery, which will open in mid-November, aims to draw on that tradition with a combination of modernist artists alongside contemporary Bay Area and international works.

Their first show, entitled "Art in Motion", will run from November 14th to January 31st, 2015, and will feature the works of well-known artists such as Alexander Calder, Vassily Kandinsky and Joan Miró, plus contemporary works from the likes of Kirstie Macleod, Marshall Elliott, Tracey Snelling and more. Here's more on what's in store:

"Inspired by the history of kinetic art in the Maeght collection and the fact that the new gallery is housed in one of San Francisco’s legendary inventor and machine-maker Rube Goldberg’s studios on Gough Street in Hayes Valley, Art in Motion brings together works that explore kinetic art in diverse forms. To celebrate the opening of the new gallery and encapsulating its new program, European modernists will be shown alongside Bay-Area contemporary artists whose practice involves what Calder referred to as 'art that lifts figures, colors and scenery off the canvas and proves that art is not rigid'."

The Jules Maeght Gallery opening reception will be held on Thursday, November 13th from 6pm-8pm, and Hayes Valley neighbors are all invited, so mark your calendars for the debut of a world-class neighborhood art destination.
