October Surprise: New Breakfast Pop-Up Coming To Wing WingsFacebook / Sugarfoot Grits
Breakfast, at Wing Wings. Wrap your head around that one for a sec.

On Saturdays throughout the month of October, 422 Haight Street will open early to host a new breakfast pop-up featuring Sugarfoot Grits.

Sugarfoot is run by Stephanie Fields, a North Carolina native who has lived in San Francisco for the past five years. "Sugarfoot" happens to be Stephanie's nickname, given to her by her Uncle White, a foodie himself who runs a diner in North Carolina's Outer Banks. It was Uncle White who truly got Stephanie hooked on grits.

"[He] used to make me big bowls of my favorite comfort food—cheese grits & eggs—and tell me hilarious family stories & secrets," Stephanie tells us. "He also slept in a lawn chair in his kitchen during downtime and he has a speaking voice that should have a movie character based off of it. He's amazing. Grits has always been my favorite food, but that time with him really sealed the deal."

When Stephanie moved to San Francisco, she had trouble finding "real" grits, so she would have folks from home ship them to her. Eventually she realized there was an opportunity to serve up the grits she loves to the new city she called home.  So in December 2012, Stephanie started up Sugarfoot, then as a pop-up at Amnesia. In the Spring of 2013 she was accepted to La Cocina, which kicked off Sugarfoot as a serious venture. In the year since, Sugarfoot has popped up all over SF, from appearances at Off the Grid to weekly gigs at the Mission Community Market. And in November and December, Sugarfoot will be a regular staple at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market.

But first, Wing Wings.

Every Saturday morning this month, Sugarfoot will be taking over the Wing Wings space.  The menu will be simple to start—a combination of cheese grits, bacon, greens, and fried eggs, plus a small batch of sweet potato grits as an option. There will also be coffee available from an as-yet-undetermined local source. Stephanie will be refining the menu options and recipes as the month unfolds.

Sugarfoot will be at 422 Haight Street every Saturday in October from 8am to 11am, so be there bright and early tomorrow for the inaugural breakfast.
