Around 11am yesterday, you might have noticed more than the usual chaos at Haight and Belvedere: half a dozen police cruisers, an SFPD dirt bike on the sidewalk, a crowd of onlookers standing by across the street. What was going on, you wondered?
The first witness stated that part of the chaos involved the attack of a woman walking down the street by a homeless person, who allegedly hit her with a two-by-four.
We asked some bystanders for an account of the proceedings at the time all the action was unfolding: according to accounts, the police were apparently responding to three individual calls at the same time and place.

Then there was a lockdown at Wasteland (1660 Haight), where SFPD officers responded to a call of someone suspected of carrying a firearm, who they chased into the store. A Wasteland employee said yesterday afternoon that the suspect didn't have a firearm after all, and nobody was injured.
At the same time, police had a suspect for one of the incidents—it's unclear which—detained on the sidewalk in front of El Faro at 1654 Haight St.
Then, cop cruisers gathered immediately after the Haight and Belvedere incidents at the Whole Foods parking lot, according to another Wasteland employee who happened to be there for a cup of coffee before starting his shift. He said the police there were responding to a stolen car call.
Did you see any of this stranger-than-usual activity? The SFPD was unavailable for details on the incidents as of this posting, but we'll update you when and if we learn more. Meanwhile, play safe and have a great weekend.
