Lower Haight Leftovers: Raccoons, Taxi Crashes, And Non-Kosher Cream Puffs

Facebook / ChouxSF

Let's close out January with some local leftovers.

First up, some weekend events. Of course tomorrow is Super Bowl Sunday, and if you're rooting for Seattle, you may want to attempt a trip to Danny Coyle's. The bar has become a destination for Seahawks fans, so we wouldn't be surprised to see folks lining up early and spilling out onto the sidewalk all afternoon/evening.

If football's not your thing, there are a few other local options for ways to spend your Sunday.

At 8am, the Kaiser Permanente Half Marathon and 5K will kick off in Golden Gate Park. While registration is closed, you can still head on over to the Panhandle and Golden Gate Park to cheer on the thousands of participating runners. Also, expect Oak and Fell streets to be closed from Broderick to Stanyan from 7:15am to 10am, with traffic blocked or limited on cross streets in the area. If you have to travel north-south, you're encouraged to use Divisadero.

For exercise of a different kind, perhaps you'd like to give martial arts a try? The Academy of Taekwondo at 988 Oak Street is hosting a neighborhood self-defense class on Sunday from 1pm to 4pm. Put on some loose-fitting clothes and swing by to learn the basics of protecting yourself. It's free and open to the public.

Also tomorrow, the Union Springs Missionary Baptist Church at 101 Fillmore (at Hermann) starts regular Sunday School classes. They're scheduled from 9:30am to 10:35am every Sunday, and will be open to students of all ages.

And once again, the Sunset Tunnel Trackway Improvement Project is canceled this weekend. As we reported earlier this month, work is on hold while the project planners try to address noise complaints from nearby residents, who are none too pleased about the loud beeping equipment keeping them up at night.

Now, in other leftover news:

Fillmore Street bakery Choux would like you to know that, as of Friday, they will no longer be certified Kosher. The shop will also now be open on Saturdays.

Heads up: on Thursday, a passerby spotted a number of raccoons hanging out in a tree somewhere in the neighborhood:

And finally, last night a taxicab apparently got a little over zealous on the Church Street just south of Duboce, and crashed into a garage next to Golden Natural Foods:

We have no details on this one other than the above tweet, but will update if we learn more.

Happy weekend, Lower Haighters.
