More Hanging Sphere Lights Could Be Coming To Lower Haight TreesPhoto: Andrew Dudley / Hoodline

The Lower Haight Merchants and Neighbors Association (LoHaMNA) is considering a plan to hang dozens of spherical lights from several trees throughout the neighborhood.

The current proposal involves an installation of lights similar to those currently on display at the southwest corner of Haight and Fillmore, in front of the Whole Foods Market. Roughly ten trees between Webster and Pierce would get about a dozen illuminated globes each.

The total cost of the project would be about $5,000, which could potentially be covered by a fundraiser, with assistance from the city, or via other means.

LoHaMNA president Devon Chulick said the lights would serve a twofold purpose.

"I just felt it would help beautify the neighborhood in a unique way and also help make things safer, since lighting deters crime," Chulick said.

Once the lights are installed, operating costs would remain low – maybe $10-20 per month per tree – since the lights are of the L.E.D. variety, Chulick told us. Those costs would be borne by the nearest landlord or business owner, with LoHaMNA perhaps covering the first year.

LoHaMNA board member Gio Acosta told us that planning is still in the preliminary stages, and that the group hasn't yet put the project to a final vote. If approved, the lights would be installed later this year.
