Sunset Saturday Roundup: Get Your Hands Dirty

A major sporting event has crowded out most Sunday events, so this weekend’s roundup focuses on being outdoors and getting your hands dirty tomorrow.

If you’re one of the approximately 113 million Americans planning to spend Sunday on the couch, consider doing Zumba in the park on Saturday. ParXercise will lead a group for beginners and experts seeking “an interval training workout that incorporates Latin dance moves.”

RSVP on Eventbrite, then meet the group at 8am at Mothers Meadow, 501-599 MLK Drive. Attendance is free.

Families of Lycée Francais de San Francisco with green thumbs are invited to RSVP for a native-plant clinic and potluck breakfast led by Olivier Combeau and Master Gardeners of San Mateo and San Francisco on Saturday from 9am to noon.

The gathering includes patio planting, native crafts and instruction in how to propagate the California plans that have been added to the school's Ortega campus. Bake something tonight and “bring a savory/sweet dish to share,” suggests the event description.

Master the basics of backyard pruning in a workshop at the Garden for the Environment at Lawton & 7th tomorrow from 10am to noon. Instructor Elisa Baier, owner of Small Spot Gardens, promises to help you “conquer your feelings of fear and bewilderment that accompany trimming-back plants” so you can promote  the health of your garden.

Class will cover pruning techniques for shrubs, small trees and perennials, and “students will also learn how to make aesthetic pruning decisions and some simple plant science.” $15 for GFE members, $25 for the public.

Saturday, February 7:

Reserve your spot now for the DIY Succulent Garden Workshop at Urban Bazaar (371 9th Ave) next Saturday. Tex, Urban Bazaar’s succulent specialist, will lead this Valentine’s Day-themed gardening class to “teach you how to create a tiny world of succulents, rocks, and moss, encapsulated in a specially chosen container.”

The class costs $40, which includes all the materials students need to make a terrarium for a special someone. Class is outdoors in Urban Bazaar’s backyard, “so please dress accordingly” for high noon in the Inner Sunset (layers, people).
