Mornings At Mojo: La Sombra Juice Pop-UpPhotos: Nuala Sawyer / Hoodline

A new pop-up has joined Mojo Bicycle Cafe's weekly lineup. But unlike Wesburger and Rice Paper Scissors, this health-conscious project serves the Divisadero corridor in the morning hours.

Open Mondays through Wednesdays from 9am to 11:30am, the new addition is called La Sombra Juice. We caught up with founder Christy Osorio to learn more about the new offering.

The idea began with a love of juice—and a background in the restaurant industry. Christy helped launch a restaurant in Oakland last year, and when that wrapped up decided it was time for her to do her own thing. She teamed up with partner Alana Corpuz and together they decided to found a juice and smoothie company. Last December, they opened their metaphorical doors.

Although Christy lives in the Mission and Alana in Oakland, they both used to live in the Divisadero neighborhood. Christy is a cyclist, and remembers when Mojo opened up. She was a regular, and during a recent visit back to her old haunt the idea to do a La Sombra pop-up at Mojo took shape. In January of this year, she appeared with her cooler full of fruits and vegetables and got started serving the neighborhood.

Aside from its Mojo pop-up, La Sombra also holds down a second pop-up location at Bissap Baobab in Downtown Oakland. Juices are available at that location on Tuesdays through Fridays, from 9am to 2:30pm.

As for the juice itself, the menu changes seasonally. This is not just to support what's in season, but also what tastes good. La Sombra sources a lot of its fruit and vegetables from the Civic Center Farmers Market, as well as local organic farmers such as Serendipity Farms. For all tropically-grown fruits such as pineapples, they work with a local organic importer.

One aspect that sets La Sombra apart from many other local juicers is their opinions on sweetness. Although an all-fruit smoothie might seem like the healthiest option, Christy points out that they can contain tons of sugar. She prefers to mix fruit with almond milk, coconut milk, and grains like flax to give it a more complex flavor, and to cut down on sugar content.

As for what the future holds, for now Christy is happy with the pop-up model. Although having a La Sombra storefront is eventually the dream, first her goals are to find ways to run more of a community-based company. To begin with, La Sombra's Oakland location will be hosting Ashtanga yoga classes on the second and fourth Thursdays of every month. There are also tentative plans in motion to host CSA drop-offs. A collaboration with Wing Wings later this month should also kickstart La Sombra's presence in the cyclist community.

Stop by La Sombra at 639 Divisadero St. on Mondays-Wednesdays, 9am to 11:30am.
