SFFD Clears Mini-Encampment From Vacant Home RestaurantPhoto: Rose Garrett/Hoodline

Firefighters responding to a call at the former Home restaurant at 2100 Market St. this afternoon discovered a mini-encampment inside the structure.

Three SFFD engines arrived at the scene at around 1:30pm today in response to a call about a fire. Upon entering the structure, they discovered that the westernmost Market-facing annex of the building was occupied by at least two individuals, who were evacuated and appeared to be homeless.

Initial reports were mixed as to the the status of the fire, with one firefighter on the scene stating that they were still looking around the space, and another saying they found "a little one" inside.

The two men found inside the space could be seen gathering their belongings, with one wheeling a shopping cart up the sidewalk, and the other stuffing objects into an overflowing suitcase. Police arrived shortly before the fire engines left the scene, and it appears no one was injured. We'll update this story if we hear more about exactly what happened.

Home has stood vacant since August of 2011, despite efforts by Chipotle to open a location there in 2013. Yesterday, we revealed new designs for the planned mixed-use development to replace the vacant building, though it's still unclear when the current structure will be razed and the new building will break ground.
