Less than eight months after fast-casual eatery Urban Picnic opened its doors on 18th Street, the restaurant will be closing down, but a concept shuffle will bring more Vietnamese food to the space.

Owner Trang Nguyen plans to retain the space and reopen with a new restaurant called "Mekong Kitchen", which will offer "both traditional and modern takes on heartier Vietnamese specialties," as opposed to the more health-conscious Urban Picnic lineup.

"I'm excited to launch the first location of my new concept, Mekong Kitchen, in the Castro," Nguyen told Hoodline. "Being an active Castro Merchant Community Member gave me insight into what the community really wants: heartier, bolder flavors ā€” so Iā€™m using that as my inspiration for Mekong's menu, which will offer a really delicious lineup of both homestyle Vietnamese classics, as well as some fresh takes on traditional foods.ā€

Sunday will be the last day for Urban Picnic in its current form, so stop by before then if you're a fan, and stay tuned for a firm opening date once Urban Picnic completes its transformation into Mekong Kitchen early next month.
